Fencibles (Info)

Taking notes is an important part of learning, the following are notes I have taken in the process of learning about the Fencibles who settled in our area and in doing so became part of the history of the Panmure area.

Who were the fencibles?
Retired soldiers from Britain and Ireland that defended Auckland.

When did they come and how did they get here?
The Fencibles and their families arrived in Auckland, New Zealand between 1847 and 1852 on board the following ships.

Why did they come and who told them to come?
They came because they had not much food in their land and because Governor grey asked them to come.

Where did they settle?
Onehunga, Otahuhu, Howick and Panmure

What influenced them to come here?
Maori People promised them a piece of land and they had a famine in their own land.

How did they go to the toilet?
They had a potty that they kept under the bed or in a bucket.
